100 Years of Modern Finnish Architecture

Why legendary architect Alvar Aalto never wanted to publish his work from the 20´s? Can functionalism be romantic? Why Louis Kahn did not want to see Reima Pietilä´s Dipoli when he visited Finland? What is vernacular modernism?

The lecture is a journey to Finnish architecture during last 100 years. The idea is to present one project from every year including all the great masters of Finnish architecture and most significant projects. Besides the architecture, the lecture tells about the different movements of Finnish architecture and society.

Lauri Louekari teached architecture in University of Oulu 1981-2010, last years as a professor of Modern Architecture. Louekari has been writing in many publications and published several books. Wood has played a key role in Lauri Louekari´s own architecture since very beginning. In recent, he has studied the use of solid timber structures. Lauri Louekari´s Villa Valtanen won a respected wood prize, «A Log House of the Year» by Puuwoodholzbois at the 2012.
